The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore, MD is a Catholic minor basilica known for its Neoclassical architecture, dedicated May 31, 1821 and elevated to basilica status in 1937 by Pope Pius XI. In 1789, Pope Pius VI established the Diocese of Baltimore and appointed John Carroll as its first bishop.
