St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica in Galveston, TX is a Catholic minor basilica known for its Gothic Revival architecture, dedicated November 26, 1848 and elevated to basilica status in 1979 by Pope John Paul II. In 1847, Pope Pius IX established the Diocese of Galveston, then responsible for all of Texas, and appointed French missionary Jean-Marie Odin as its first bishop.
