St. James Cathedral Basilica in Brooklyn, NY is a Catholic minor basilica known for its Greek and Baroque Revival architecture, dedicated August 28, 1823 and elevated to basilica status on May 6, 1982, by Pope John Paul II. Pope John Paul II visited during his 1979 US trip, and in 1982, on its 160th anniversary, he elevated the church to a minor basilica to recognize the enduring faith of immigrants and their vital role in shaping Catholicism on Long Island.
