Basilica of St Mary Star of the Sea

Key West, Florida

The Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea in Key West, FL is a Catholic minor basilica known for its Victorian Gothic and Caribbean architecture, dedicated August 20, 1905 and elevated to basilica status on May 31, 2012, by Pope Benedict XVI. In the 1560s, Spanish Jesuits established a mission to bring the Gospel to the island’s indigenous people, but outbreaks of smallpox and measles diminished the population and forced the missionaries to withdraw.
