The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine in St. Augustine, FL is a Catholic minor basilica known for its Spanish Colonial and Renaissance Revival architecture, dedicated March 9, 1966 and elevated to basilica status on August 28, 1976, by Pope Paul VI. On the Feast of St. Augustine of Hippo, August 28, 1565, Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés first spotted Florida after a long voyage from Spain, so he named the new settlement after the saint.
